2011 FG Ford Falcon Range.
Gains Safety Updates, ZF Six-Speed Auto,
Euro IV Emissions Compliance
FORD AUSTRALIA HAS today announced a number of significant upgrades to its FG Falcon range,
including the ZF six-speed automatic transmission confirmed in January.
The Falcon's inline-six is now also compliant with upcoming Euro IV emissions regulations - an upgrade announced by Ford in 2008.
Replacing the five-speed automatic transmission in naturally aspirated sedan and Ute variants,
the introduction of the ZF unit and a number of hardware upgrades sees fuel consumption drop by up to 8.5 percent.
Entry level Falcon ute models currently fitted with a column shift gain a new six-speed column shift mechanism,
helping the workhorse utes maintain their three-across bench seat.
All Falcon variants powered by either the 4.0 litre I6 or 4.0 litre I6 Turbo engines are now available with the six-speed auto either as standard or as an option.
The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual remains the standard transmission for XR sedans and all Falcon Ute models.
Helping the homegrown inline-six advance from Euro III to Euro IV compliance,
the updated FG Falcon gets a new catalytic converter,
along with an upgraded Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Software updates to the PCM include optimised cold-start, warm-up and hot idle calibration,
revised pedal progression for a more linear launch,
optimised upshift and gear selection and enhancements to the Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off for improved fuel economy in city driving.
Fuel consumption for all naturally-aspirated petrol Falcon sedan variants with automatic transmissions is now listed at 9.9 l/100km -
down from 10.5 l/100km (10.1 for G6E) -
making for an improvement of 5.7 percent for the XT, G6 and XR6, and 2.0 percent for the G6E.
Exhaust emissions are listed at 236g/km, equating to a 5.5 star Greenhouse Rating.
Naturally-aspirated Ute variants see an 8.5 percent improvement, the Ute, R6 and XR6 models listing a fuel consumption figure of 10.7 l/100km.
Neither the XR8 Falcon sedan or Ute are included in the Euro IV upgrade.
Ford Australia says it will reveal its plans for the XR8 at "a later date".
This follows news in January that Ford will add the upcoming 'Coyote' V8 to the local Falcon line-up.
Safety upgrades across the FG Falcon range include the addition of side head/thorax airbags as standard equipment.
Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and iPod compatibility are now also standard across all Falcon sedans and Utes.

2011 Kia Cerato Five-Door Hatch Unveiled, Australian Launch In October
KIA HAS THIS week unveiled a new five-door hatch version of the Cerato,
currently available in Australia in both sedan and Koup form.
Overseas, the five-door variant of the Cerato (sold in the US as the Forte)
will be powered by the same 2.0 litre and 2.4 litre petrol engines offered with the existing Forte pair.
In Australia, the sedan and Koup are offered with the 2.0 litre engine only.
The two petrol engines are paired with new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
In the US, the Forte five-door features lower suspension, with paddle shifters, push-button start and satellite navigation figuring among its options. A subtly restyled front grille features up front, along with a lower valence design.
The five-door Cerato is scheduled to be introduced in Australia in October, and further details and pricing will be revealed closer to its local launch.

Holden - $210 Million Dollar Loss For 2009
HOLDEN HAS this week announced a $210.6 million loss in the last financial year,
the result of GM's decision to retire the Pontiac brand - a move that saw Holden's export programme take a huge hit.
Holden Chief Financial Officer Mark Bernhard said the cancellation of Holden's left-hand-drive Pontiac G8
production and export deal meant a loss of $224.3 million in one-off development costs, saved only by a small after-tax profit of $12.8 million.
"The result, while disappointing, was the by-product of one of the most severe economic downturns in recent memory," Mr Bernhard said.
Total revenue for Holden in the 2009-10 financial year was $3.8 billion, down from $5.8 billion in 2008.
Mr Bernhard said that while the carmaker's domestic sales also suffered as a result of the economic crisis,
recent growth in the global market has seen the company's finances improve, leading to a profitable start to 2010.
"As the health of the world economy began to improve in the second half of the year, so too did our finances, Mr Bernhard said.
"At this time that we started to witness the benefits of some of the more difficult
restructuring decisions made during the year to ensure we were operating on a leaner, more efficient base.
This contributed to the company's positive operating cash flow of $289.8 million."
Holden is set to begin local assembly of its new Cruze small car, in both sedan and hatch bodyshapes.
A wagon variant is expected to join the line-up in the future.
Hamilton's Burnout Mercedes
to be auctioned off!

25-year-old Hamilton made headlines on Friday when
he was caught by police for doing doughnuts after leaving the Albert Park Formula One Grand Prix track in Melbourne.
The V8-powered Mercedes-Benz, similar to the one pictured above, was impounded by police after the incident under Victoria’s anti-hoon laws.
Hamilton was charged with improper use of a motor vehicle.
A bidding war is currently under way for the car with local Mercedes-Benz dealerships and Formula One enthusiasts both said to be keen to get hold of the car.
The car, which has approximately 5000kms on the odometer, was only driven around 100km by Hamilton during his two-day loan.
A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson said this morning that due to the car’s brief but illustrious history that it is highly likely it will fetch more than its $150,000 list price.
Mercedes-Benz will donate any money made above that figure to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

Aussie cops impound F1 driver Lewis Hamilton’s car

A few hours after earning the fastest practice time in the Australian Grand Prix last Friday, Lewis Hamilton had his car impounded for improper use.
After Hamilton beat his McLaren teammate Jenson Button in the practice race, he drove his Mercedes out on the streets and performed a “burnout with smoking tires and a fishtail” right within sight of Victoria Police in a van.
The lawmen immediately arrested Hamilton, who later apologized.
“What I did was silly, and I want to apologize for it,” said Hamilton.
Ford Falcon Family Wagon axed.

Ford have made the decision to stop making the well known ford falcon family wagon.
After downward spiralling sales for the last 5 years the decision was final.
Also due to the new popularity of the Ford Territory, it almost becomes a direct replacement.
Although, it has been officially replaced by the smaller Ford Mondeo wagon that will be released later this year in petrol or diesel options.
Ford believe it was a hard decision to make, but definitely a positive one.
